Kuumbwa Jazz Camp
At the beginning of my journey as a drummer, jazz music inspired me. I really didn’t know what I was listening to, but I loved it! Some of the music had a playful vibe, while other tracks I listened to were angry and rebellious. Even though I had a hard time understanding it at first, I could tell that the players had some serious mastery over their instrument. All of this intrigued me so much I had to learn how to do it. I’m still a student to this day of the drums, of music, of jazz…. It all seems to be the same thing the more you get into it.
Every summer I get the opportunity to work with a handful of young players that are willing to immerse themselves for two weeks of summer playing jazz. It’s really rewarding to see their eyes light up when they learn something new and finally get it. Working with the Kuumbwa Jazz Center for the Summer Jazz Camp has been a great way for me to inspire young musicians to take the journey. Year after year, this camp is such an amazing experience to be a part of.
